Local Musical Talent - Matt Palka

Typically, my subject matter is a bit on the serious side, but today I'm departing from that . I woke up this morning and read Shout Youngstown and learned that Matt Palka has entered a contest where the prize is a recording contract and $25,000. Several weeks ago I went to the Mahoning Commons Holiday Open Studio and Sale and as I wandered down the halls of the Ward Bakery Building I heard guitar and singing, I felt compelled to follow it to its source. I didn't recognize the young man playing guitar and singing, but I couldn't walk away. While I stood there listening, I noticed a stack of books on a table. Being a bibliophile, I had to check them out. The title of the book was " A Moment in the Sun". It is the story of a young man whose parents started pressuring him to work in the family fudge store after he graduated from college. The main character Riley Holiday decided he wanted no part of this, bought a bicycle, and took off on a solo cross-country trip from Ohio to California. He lived on $600.00 and a guitar, slept in homeless shelters, parks and anywhere he could find to pitch his tent. As I stood there reading, I noticed that the book came with a CD. A young woman behind the table recognizing a potential sale when she saw one, informed me that the author of the book and the musician playing were one and the same. I of course said I would buy one if I could have it signed. When Matt completed the song he was performing he came over to where I was and he explained that he has been doing a cross country tour in a VW bus. I looked at the photo of the VW and asked him if the prior owner had also given him the book "How to Keep your Volkswagon Alive". Turns out that he did. I only know of this book as long ago we had one of those VW buses, and thank God we also had a copy of that book, albiet a far older printing than what is currently available. I write of all of this to encourage you to vote for Matt's video by going to Star 98. 7. Let's support our local musicians and artists! they are some of the best. Thanks.

I'm honored, Debra, to be mentioned here. I had a couple follow ups. Though not originally a Youngstown native, I've spent much time working on creative endeavors in the city this past summer and fall. So much so, that Youngstown has claimed me her own. I can't convince most people otherwise, so... I'm happy to call Youngstown a second home to the road, California, and the west side of Ohio where I was raised. (I like to be on the move.) It's been a gift to work with the amazing talent here. Having an outsider's prospective, I hope everyone does know that something magical, positive and valid is happening in this community. I hope it is nurtured and encouraged as it should be, as I have grown to love Youngstown.

Second, I donated an autographed copy of the novel/CD and copy of my music video for this Sunday's Valley 24 Holiday show at Cedars, which will benefit the Mahoning County Salvation Army. Today, that novel/soundtrack, that I published on my own, just received a great national review in this months 'Performing Songwriter Magazine'. An independent can make a difference! Wherever my travels take me, I will shout and defend Youngstown. ~ Matt Palka

Dear Debbie,
I finally watched the video with no distractions! Wonderful. Bravo to all the participants and to Matt. Your presence at the STAGE was a gift.

I am a native Californian (Bakersfield and Davis) and as Matt says "There is something magical here in Youngstown". Natives and those "not from around here" are blessed with the opportunity to create a vibrant, connected, compassionate community. And the truth is: "Youngstown It's Not Easy" as a shirt Ray has with a silhouette of a three-legged dog proclaims... Ahhh, who want Easy, it makes you complacent...

I have only lived here 14 years and positive change has accelerated over the last 3 or 4... And this past year - whew - hard to keep up with the activities and activists and artists...

Home is where the heart is, truly!
Peace.

Ok and of course I had to try to listen to all of them; then I got down to last video on first page and it seems like there are 32 more pages????? I'm going back in but, firs Im voting for Matt. On that page, most of the other groups or singers had trouble not singing 'flat' LOL There were a few that weren't bad though. Matt should be able to hold his own he's very good!

Ok I must be challenged but I can't figure out how to vote. Let me know! I've gone through 12 pages of videos I am done. LOL

The link has changed slightly for voting. Click on this link http://star987.com/pages/rockstar2

The artists are listed alphabetically by first names. Look for the red bus. I'm listed in almost the exact middle.
